Tipped as one of Hong Kong’s most spectacular nature reserves the Hong Kong Wetland Park is an ecological marvel in the heart of the urban jungle that is Hong Kong. A premier educational, tourism and conservation facility, the park was set up in the late 90’s to serve as a green initiative that would inculcate the value of preserving the nation’s natural wetland heritage for future generations. Encompassing a wide range of ecosystems, animal habitats and wetland wildlife species it is difficult to believe that the venue was constructed on a site that was intended to serve as an ecological mitigation district. Frequented by locals and seasoned visitors alike the sprawling wetland park has become an iconic attraction for naturalists worldwide.

With a massive 10,000 square metre visitor centre and a 60-hectare Wetland Reserve the park is a treasure trove of edutainment for the whole family. The  Wetland Interactive World is of course one of the highlights of the enclave as it contains themed exhibition halls, an indoor play region dubbed Swamp Adventure, a souvenir shop, theatre and its own resource centre.  The Exhibition galleries vary from 250m2 spaces to 1200m2 halls that explore the significance of wetlands in the aspects of biodiversity, conservation and human civilization. Mouse deer, green turtles and false gharials are also on display at the Living Wetland Gallery which showcases Hong Kong’s indigenous fauna and flora varieties via animals and replicas.

The park is also ideal for bird watching enthusiasts as the Wetland Reserve contains specially built habitats for wetland species such as water fowls and many others. Guests can also gauge the scene from the Wetland Bird Watch Tower’s telescope while the Wetland Reserve’s Wetland Discovery Centre offers interactive experiences that educate visitors on the composition of local wetlands.  A Mangrove Boardwalk, Succession Walk and Stream Walk are also part of the enclave which also includes three designated Bird Hides located adjacent to a fishpond.  The muddy and riverside habitats of Mudskippers, Black-faced Spoonbills and Fiddler Crabs are also visible here in addition to being the home of famed crocodile Pui Pui.

Housed in an 8m by 9m enclosure which largely consists of a pool, the home of the beloved crocodile also contains plant laden basking areas, sheltered regions and hiding locales for the creature. A heat pad and infra red heaters are some of the other facilities available at this section while a scale for weighing is also found within the enclosure.
