Go Wet and Wild in Hong Kong's Wetland Park
May 2nd, 2011 by Aldouspi

Built on a site that was originally tipped to house an ecological mitigation area, the Hong Kong Wetland Park has proved to be a successful investment benefiting both the country’s ecological and tourism sectors simultaneously since its inception. A popular haunt for nature lovers from home and abroad the renowned conservation and nature reserve has now become one of the city’s landmark attractions. A sprawling parkland combining educational and recreational values, the venue is an engaging attraction that has captivated the imagination of both children and adults.

With a sprawling Visitor Centre that spreads out over a 10,000 square metre area the park encompasses a 60-hectare Wetland Reserve and the famed Wetland Interactive World. Consisting of five exhibition galleries the Wetland Interactive World includes a resource centre, projection room, souvenir shop, dining room, enclosed play area (swamp adventure) and a theatre. Highlighting the importance of conservation, biodiversity and civilization, the Wetland Interactive World is devoted to specially constructed wetlands, waterfowl habitats and that of other animals. Occupying spaces of 250-1200 square metres guests can also learn about the fauna and fauna varieties indigenous to Hong Kong while the Living Wetland Gallery features a plethora of animal models including those of green turtles, false gharials and mouse deer.

The Wetland Discovery Centre portion of the Wetland Reserve offers visitors the unique opportunity of experiencing local wetlands for themselves with hands on activities. Other highlights include a Mangrove Boardwalk, Stream Walk and a Succession Walk while next to the fish pond guests will find  three bird havens along with riversides and mudflat surroundings that take visitors to the habitats of black-faced spoonbills, fiddler crabs and mudskippers.

Pui Pui’s Home is another must-see attraction in the premises as the beloved crocodile of the same name dwells in a landscape created specially for her.  Designed to ensure a comfortable, healthy eco system for reptiles Pui Pui’s Home is an 8m by 9m compound of which 70% is devoted to a 1m deep pool.  Outdoor features include a heat pad, weighing scale and infra-red heaters while the area around the pool is flanked with basking areas, hiding locations and plants that provide shelter to the reptiles.  Thematic exhibitions such as the “Fantastic World of Insects”  display are also hosted by the park which also offer a plethora of exploration and education packages to suit touring school children and travel groups.

Those in search of a conveniently located hotel in Wan Chai should look no further than the elegant Cosmo Hotel. Pleasantly situated within close range of the city’s financial district, this stylish Hong Kong hotel is also a mere 45 minutes from the nearest airport.
