The Many Benefits of Rain Chain Downspouts
By: Travis Harper
Rain chain downspouts are a very functional element of your rainwater control system. In addition to being both practical and easy on the eyes, they can provide a number of extra benefits. While there may be many more benefits than I list here, consider some of my personal favorites.
One benefit is that they are so special. Rain Chains catch one’s eye because they are so different from the rectangular tube style downspouts on most homes. They can highlight a front porch, or more likely, a backyard patio or deck. Combined with a rain barrel and they are distinctive statements of your ecological commitment as well. They may become quite a conversation piece when you have a barbecue.
Another reason is that they are wonderful to look at when it rains. As the water courses down the chain, it makes the chain move – jerking and vibrating as it goes. Place a planter, birdbath or basin at the bottom of the chain and it enhances the effect. And don’t forget the cold months when Rain Chain Downspouts may be covered in ice and shine in the sun.
Rain chains are truly a year-round pleasure.
You can even use them to provide a pleasant water feature for your garden. Water cascading down the chain or through the cups can be quite tranquil to watch. This could be a rain chain hanging from your gutter but might be a chain hung in your backyard with an hidden source of water that you control. If you are planning a water feature for your garden and it has some height to it, it may possibly support a rain chain. Your imagination is the only limitation here.
A key benefit is that Rain Chains produce a soothing sound as water works it way from top to bottom. It can be very stress relieving to sit on a deck, porch or patio when it rains. Close your eyes and listen to the hypnotic rhythms as the water cascades down the chain from your roof to the ground. We all need those moments when we can completely relax and this functional but attractive downspout substitute can help you tune out the chaotic world. This is a real psychological benefit, even if only lasts for a brief moment in time.
Don’t ever forget that Rain Chain Downspouts perform important work. Their basic job is to protect your house by guiding rainwater runoff from your roof to a place on the ground that drains away from the foundation. Controlling that water flow is critical and rain chains do this task very, very well. If you have decided to collect rain water runoff in a rain barrel, then a rain chain is an excellent method to use. The chain can easily be shortened to the exact length you need. You can actually see the water flowing down the rain chain and will know instantly if there is an obstruction in your rain gutter preventing the correct flow of water to your rain barrel.
These are just a few of the benefits of Rain Chain Downspouts. I am willing to bet that you will be able to come up with some of your own ideas after you install yours!
