Your Questions About Organic Gardening Gifts

Laura asks…

Organic nursery in Madison, WI?

My friends who are getting married, just moved there, and I would like to get them a gift certificate as a wedding gift. (They plan to garden) Im also outside the area, but knowing Madison, would be suprised if they didnt have one.

Garden Lover answers:

There are quite a few organic businesses in the Madison area, but a full-out organic nursery… that’s a difficult beast, simply because of the way plants are cultivated. But there is a fun shop called “orange tree imports” that may just the bill. Here is the web site
http://www.orangetreeimports.com/

And if you are looking for a native plant sort of place, The Prairie Nursery might be the ticket. They do GC and have a website, but are located a bit north of Madison (but certainly a fun day trip) in Westfield, WI.

William asks…

Include ingredient list in gift basket?

I am making a gift basket for a benefit silent auction. It will be filled with items that I canned myself. All the prep was done to FDA Guidelines.

The basket will include:
Mild Salsa
Hot Salsa
Dilly Beans
Dill Pickle Spears
Dill Pickle Slices
Whole italian Dill Pickles
Bread and Butter Pickles
Sweet Pickle Relish
Blueberry Jam
Apple Sauce
Apple Butter

All of the vegetables were grown in my garden or bought from a local farmer including the spices 100% organic.

Should I include and ingredient list for these items in the basket?

Garden Lover answers:

Yes, but make it a low key kind of list.

You are not selling these gift baskets in a store, so I don’t think you should have to go overboard with your list. However, I think that if you write a brief message about how you put this basket together yourself out of ingredients from your own garden and organic farmers markets, you could get people to bid more for your basket, given the current trend favoring locally made goods.

Keep it brief! I ‘d write a paragraph about how you are local person that put everything together the way you did. Then in the next paragraph do an ingredient list. From a legal standpoint, the goods are not technically for sale, so you probably don’t have to include ingredients, but it would be nice.
