Endangered Species in India

India is blessed with rich and most rare varieties of flora and fauna. A number of species of animals, birds, mammals make the Indian wildlife one of the richest in the world. But still endangered species are a black patch to Indian wildlife. A species is known as endangered, when very few of its type left, and could be dissolved gradually and later become extinct. At present there are total 762 species of plant and animal, that have been declared extinct. When any species has not been seen for 50 years, it becomes extinct.

The main reasons behind these endangered species are the varying environmental parameters, pollution, rapid industrialization, increasing cutting of forests, global warming, drastic changes in climate, illegal hunting and evolution of agriculture etc. The endangered species in India are 8.86 percent of the total species of the world.

The royal tigers of India are one of the most attractive and rich mammal, that are worldwide famous for their unique breed. But the worst part is that, this amazing mammal is also enlisted among endangered species. To save royal Indian tiger many conservation programs have been undertaken, such as Project Tiger, Save Tiger etc.

As per IUCN (International Union For the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) research of 2009, the endangered species of India are categorized as CR (Critically Endangered), EN (Endangered) and Vulnerable.

Critically Endangered: There are total 52 CR species in India, some of them are Ganges Shark, Indian Vulture, Himalayan Wolf, Jenkin’s Shrew, Malabar Large-spotted Civet, Salim Ali’s Fruit Bat, Pygmy Hog, Namdapha flying Squirrel etc.

Endangered: There are total 117 EN species in the country, some of them are Blue Whale, Fin Whale, Wild Cat, Asiatic Lion, Asiatic Wild Dog, Golden Leaf Monkey, Hispid Hare, Asiatic Black Bear, Indian Elephant, Lion-tailed Macaque, Malabar Civet, Indus River Dolphin, Nicobar Shrew, Red Panda, Wild Water Buffalo, Snow Leopard, Nilgiri Leaf Monkey, Marsh Mangoose, Royal Bengal Tiger etc.

Vulnerable: There are total 271 vulnerable species, some of them are Andaman Rat, Argali, Asiatic Golden Cat, Black-stripped Weasel, Barahsinga, Blackbuck, Central Kashmir Vole, Brown Bear, Clouded Leoperd, Four-horned Antelope, Gaur, tiger, Wild Goat, Wild Yak etc.
