Cattleya dowiana is native to the Atlantic coastal mountain areas in Costa Rica and was first brought to England in 1864 flowering the next autumn. It is perhaps one of the most beautiful of the Cattleya species. No collection should be lacking this species. The flowers are large and yellow with a deep scarlet velvety veined lip. This form also has scarlet veining in the yellow petal tips. There is also a very nice fragrance.
