April 20th, 2018 by Gardener

Starting an organic garden is a smart step in creating a healthier diet. However, you will need to put forth an effort in order to make it grow. Perhaps you are unsure of the benefits of organic horticulture, or you are unsure how to get your garden started.

TIP! You will need to properly lay sod. Your soil should be prepared before you lay the sod.

Transform the handles of your tools into convenient measuring devices. You can convert any large handle tool, such as a hoe, shovel, or rake into a measuring tool. Place the handles on the ground and measure them. Paying close attention to the measurements, use a black marker to establish each interval along the handle’s side in a clearly visible manner. The next time you find yourself in your garden, you will have one large ruler right at your fingertips.

Use slug-proof varieties of perennials wherever possible. If slugs or snails find their favorite perennials in your garden, they’ll snack all night. When you wake up in the morning, there will be very little left of your plants. Certain perennials that don’t have tough leaves are especially tasty to snails and slugs. Some perennials aren’t that tasty to snails and slugs since they have tough and hairy leaves, and an unappetizing flavor. Some of the best varieties of these include achillea, campanula, euphorbia, and heuchera.

Grow some wheat grass or cat grass next to the plants your cat seems to prefer. Try putting mothballs or citrus on your soil to wards pets away.

If you have planted vegetables within your garden, make sure that they are getting at least six hours of sunlight each day. Most members of the vegetable family need this minimum of light for proper growth. Some flowers have the same requirement for growth.

TIP! Before you plant anything in your garden, have the soil checked. Pay a small fee to have your soil analyzed, and you’ll be glad that you did when you understand what nutrients your soil is lacking.

Fertilizer in the garden is a must. Composted manure is effective in raising healthy plants, and commercial fertilizer products are safer and more convenient. It is important that you use some sort of fertilizer, although it doesn’t really matter which variety you choose.

When you’re dealing with a veggie garden, pest control may be difficult. Avoid spraying harsh chemicals on fruits and vegetables destined for your table. There is only one way to effectively control pests in your garden, and that is to stay vigilant in your efforts. When you catch a potential infestation early, the solution may be as simple as picking the pests off of your plants with your fingers.

TIP! Keep the weeds out of your garden by removing them regularly. Weeds can turn a thriving garden into a total wasteland.

To attract insects that will benefit your garden, plant heather. Bees are drawn to heather, as heather is an early provider of spring nectar. Plant a heather bed, it will house many bugs that are good for a garden such as spiders and ground beetles. With this in mind, be sure to prune your heather while wearing gardening gloves.

If you plan to raise organic plants inside, you need to think about how much light they will get. If the room you wish to grow them in faces in a direction that gets little light, choose varieties of plants which can accept this type of environment. If you cannot achieve success merely through plant selection, consider using artificial light sources.

TIP! Don’t cut your grass too short! If you leave a bit more height, the grass roots will get deeper, making your lawn stronger. If you have short grass, you will have short roots and you will dry out your grass.

As you have read, a lot of hard work and homework go into producing a plentiful organic garden. In addition, it’s true that you must be consistent if you want to see results. If you apply the tips you have just read, you should be able to grow healthy plants.
