Quality Camping Stoves

With summer around the corner and the camping season in full swing, now’s the perfect time to think about buying a new camp stove. Stoves come in all varieties, burning a variety of fuels, allowing the adventurous chef in you to cook a meal in any environment, whether its at a summer festival, or halfway up a mountain.

When buying a camping stove then, it is important to consider what you are going to be using it for. There are a great many companies producing reliable, quality camping equipment, and fantastic camping stoves can be obtained from well known brands such as Coleman, Campingaz, and MSR.

Basic Camping Stoves

Basic camping stoves should be sturdy, durable and small enough to be easily carried. These stoves, which usually burn butane (available in canisters), normally consist of a single hob (although it is not uncommon to find dual-hob versions), and are ideal for weekend campers and festival-goers. The best known style of stoves available are simply ones with a butane canister, on top of which, is placed a grill for setting a cooking pan or pot. Campers with small children to worry about may prefer the added stability of a flat stove that is less likely to get knocked over or cause an accident.

Camping Cooker

A step up from these basic stoves, and suitable for larger family camping and caravanning trips, come the camping cookers. These are larger machines, typically comprised of two hobs and a grill, sometimes with a small oven on luxury models. Accessories can include a windbreak and legs, so these stoves will typically be heavier than other stoves and may require a car to transport, although obviously not so cumbersome as to make transporting them impossible. Campingaz‘s Camp Chef range are well respected by many family campers.

Expedition Stoves

Top of the range, expedition stoves are essential kits for hardcore climbers, hikers and roamers, featuring sleek design and lightweight materials in their construction to minimize the weight for the person carrying them. These camping stoves are all about durability and efficiency, and the best of them have multi-fuel capability, meaning they can burn several different fuels, including butane, but also diesel and even unleaded gasoline.

Mountaineering specialists MSR lead the market in the field and their Dragonfly Stove is an excellent example. A relatively new type of expedition stove, exemplified by the JetBoil and Reactor models, features a sealed pan for super efficient boiling.

Make sure you buy the right camping stove for the job in hand, and always remember to buy extra fuel refills so you don’t end up with cold beans for hungry campers…
