Using Raised Garden Beds To Grow Vegetables
Jul 1st, 2010 by Myarticle

All gardeners love to have a garden that is full of flowers, trees and even tasty vegetables.  Unfortunately many of us live in areas where the soil conditions are less than suitable for growing either of these sorts of plants.  Years of compression on the soil from people walking and building on it often leave it too compacted down and it takes a lot of work to rectify this.  Using raised garden beds to plant flowers or vegetables can help you to acheive a colourful and vibrant new look for your garden.

A raised garden bed is essentially an elevated container that holds soil.  A raised bed allows gardeners to work at a more up right level which is great for people with back problems and they are flexible in terms of shape and size.  Another great thing about a raised garden bed is that you can have one that is permanently fixed to the ground using concrete or wood or you can have one that can be moved if necessary.

Whether you are choosing to grow vegetables and herbs or just flowers then a raised bed will be a good solution.  The reason for this is that the soil is more porous as it isn’t likely to be walked over so it lets more water through.  If you decide to grow flowers in a raised bed then they will gain a large amount of these nutrients from the soil which will produce the sort of flowers you can buy from a flower shop or garden centre.  When growing your own vegetables in a raised bed you will benefit from the composition of the soil.  The combination of drainage materials, compost and topsoil give vegetables the perfect growing conditions.  When growing your own vegetables you can control the growing environment more easily.  You can remove any small weeds as soon as they appear as well as being able to control insects by planting companion herbs and vegetables.

When you decide to install a bed in your garden it is important to remember a few things that will help you to get the best results from your seeds.  Your raised garden bed is going to need to be positioned somewhere where it can get plenty of sunshine.  For this reason where possible you should point them facing north.  They can also become dried out easily so it is important to monitor the moisture level of the soil.  In most cases you will need to water your bed early in the morning and in the early evening to maintain a good level of moisture.  If you create channels between a row of vegetables then this will help to prevent flooding by channeling water out of these areas.
