Topsoil is one of those things that many people don’t really think about. Without doubt, topsoil isn’t anybody’s first choice conversation about gardening when things like blossoming Petunia’s are there to be discussed.
Topsoil is actually a fascinating subject and should become the darling of any gardening chat. It’s not just one but two attributes of topsoil that make it so exciting.
The first of these is the incredible fact that without topsoil, there wouldn’t be a single living creature alive today on Earth.
Secondly, a good quality topsoil is extremely important to the gardener because without it, growing the best plants and vegetables becomes an increasingly difficult task. Buying more topsoil can be beneficial but only if the existing topsoil is not performing or hasn’t been treated well in the past.
Understanding the level of organic matter in your topsoil’s texture will determine the level of nutrients that will make your vegetation grow better. A crumbly texture that has a little weight too it, holds enough water and moisture to make it feel damp to the touch, but not dripping, is about how it needs to feel.
If your topsoil fails the texture test, then it’s always worth adding some organic matter to enrich the soil. Using farmyard manure with plenty of straw mixed into it will do the topsoil a world of good, especially if left over the winter to breakdown.
Some topsoil however will not improve no matter how much you add quality enhancers, and when this is the case, it’s time to buy new topsoil.
Meeting the British safety regulations means that the topsoil from a certain supplier will be the very best and won’t be contaminated or dangerous.
