National Geographic Pocket Guide to the Birds of North America

National Geographic Pocket Guide to the Birds of North America

This fun, affordable, beautifully illustrated introduction to birding is like taking a walk with National Geographic’s birding experts. Of this book’s 192 pages, 160 are devoted to North America’s top species, one per page, from the lowly House Wren to the majestic Bald Eagle. Carefully chosen illustrations and photographs capture the key details and typical behavior of each bird, paired with a short list of essential facts and a fun, fascinating, colloquially written “bird-ography” of each bird

As a beginner to bird watching in New York, I was very pleased with this pocket guide. It includes every species that I’m likely to see, a map of their habitat in different seasons, illustrations that point out what to look for to identify the species, and a concise and informative description which describes their call, habits, and fun facts. In short, each page gives you exactly what you need to identify a bird.

Even though this is only a pocket guide it should have more common species included. The red headed woodpecker is not in this guide so I didn’t refer to it any more. Now using the N.G. Field Guide, it’s larger and heavier and not as easy to carry, but has more birds in it, including the red headed woodpecker.

I bought this particular edition for two reasons. First, it is coauthored by Laura Erikson, a true “birder” and an exceptional photographer. I learn a great deal from her whenever she is available online at the Cornell Lab livestreaming Great Blue Heron cams. Second, it’s National Geographic!
