Your cannot prevent cut flowers from wilting, but you can slow the process. To get the most beauty for the longest period out of your flowers however, there are several tricks that you can use. These will keep your blossoms looking their best for a lot longer than normal.
1.) Make sure the glass vase you use is clean. Don’t put new flowers into a vase that you just pulled flowers out of, chances are there are still some old plant cells and harmful bacteria on the glass that will effect the new flowers.
2.) Picking flowers from your own garden? Gather them either in the early morning or in the early evening. This is when the plant’s temperature is at its lowest which help sustain the plant if cut. Note that in the morning your flowers have stored most of their food for the day and their fragrance is generally at its strongest.
3.) Again if you are starting with your own flowers, place them in a container of water up to their heads overnight, they will soak up as much water as possible during that time. This is not needed for bought flowers – they will already have been treated.
4.) When cutting flower stems, cut at an angle. This exposes more of the inner stem, which means that more of the inner stem will be touched by the water, allowing for maximum intake for the flower.
5.) Place the flowers in a lovely crystal vase and fill with the water about 3/4 of the way up the stems. If you use a plant feed, it should contains an acid, a sugar and a biocide. The biocide is to control fungus and bacteria, the acid will promote the taking up of water by the stem and the sugar provides the needed nutrients.
6.) Change the water every couple of days – don’t just top it off. This will get rid of a good amount of the bacteria in the water and provide fresh supply of water which is easier to soak up.
7.) And, finally, if the base of the stems get dirty or clogged up, take the flowers out and re-cut the stems a little further up.
Using these simple tricks will ensure your flowers look their best for the longest time possible.
Below you will find a list I have compleld of many nice vases in which your flowers would look great!
