HEIRLOOM TOMATO: Heirloom Tomatoes are just what their name implies. They have been handed down, through generations of farmers and gardeners, from family member to family member. Many of these tomato varieties are known to have thrived since the 1800’s. Unlike hybrids, they are not selectively bred for taste or appearance. They are open-pollinated, growing ‘true to type’ plants, like their predecessors, from seed. Heirloom Tomato Plants will add untraditional color and pleasing variety to yo

Mexican Miniature Watermelon 15 Seeds -Melothria scabra

  • Newly rediscovered heirloom
  • Produces abundant crops of 1-2″ fruits that have the appearance of miniature watermelons
  • 60-70 days to maturity
  • Great for growing on a trellis
  • 15 Seeds

Newly rediscovered heirloom. Produces abundant crops of 1-2″ fruits that have the appearance of miniature watermelons, and fall off the vines when ripe. Actually a sweet cucumber flavor, contrasted by a surprising sourness, as if they are already pickled! Great for growing on a trellis. 60-70 days.

I bought a ton of seed from these people last spring, and initially gave them a good review b/c they shipped so quickly. I had no idea that NOTHING I bought from them would so much as SPROUT! I was horribly disappointed and wasted a LOT of money on these heirloom seeds, when I should have just gone to my good old standby, Baker Creek. Not one thing even attempted to grow, and I’m an ok gardener! Big waste of time, money, and energy. Will NEVER buy from Hirts again. EVER.

The things I didn’t like about this product:

    – out of 50 seeds, only 19 germinated and survived long enough to be planted, and of those, 3 have no tomatoes at all on them.

-seeds were all mixed together, so I still have no idea what I have in my garden. It would have been helpful to know which were which, at least with the Aunt Ruby’s German Green, so we would have known to pick the first tomato to ripen on that plant, rather than leave it on the vine to rot while we were waiting for it to get darker. We didn’t know that the German Green would get any sort of a pink or red blush when it was ripe, so we assumed that that tomato was one of the red or pink varieties.

    – some of the tomatoes pictured on the seed packet were not at all among the varieties that were inside the packet. I expected the green ones to actually be shaped like the long oval green ones on the packet, which further added to my confusion and led to the wasted German Green.

The only positive is that the 16 plants that actually made it to the garden and actually have fruit on them are doing very well. They seem hardy, and produce well (if they would only ripen, now!), they seem to be fairly resistant to disease and pests, so that I had to do very little in the way of pest control and pampering. They have all grown tall and many are so large that they have outgrown the cages and the vines have started breaking and actually taking root on their own. But still, 16 healthy, producing plants, that I don’t even know what variety or color most are yet, out of a package of 50 seeds is pretty disappointing.

I ordered these seeds, planted them indoors in early spring and transplated to the garden in May. At first I didn’t think they were going to make it but suddenly they just took off! I put a chickenwire cage around the plant to keep the rabbits away. The vines grew and covered the fence and stayed contained to the fence (no wandering). The vines look like bindweed. When I tasted my “mini watermelons” they were crisp and tasted a lot like cucumber with a little bit of the taste of the green part of a watermelon. Because they were so crisp and they tasted like cucumber I decided to pickle some of them. What fun! The came out crispy on the outside and a little soft in the middle so it is like a little explosion in your mouth. I had many of my friends taste the “little pickles” and they all want more so I’ll be planting these every year!

My children and I ordered a selection of really fun seeds from you. (Hmong Red Cucumber
Black Sea Man Tomato, Rare Tigger Melon, Mexican Miniature Watermelon, Toga Striped Eggplant, Purple Cauliflower, Unwins Exhibiton 7 Pound Onion, Rare Red Bull Brussels Sprout)

My germination rate has been about 25% or less. All my other seeds from other companies are doing wonderful on my tables, but my Hirt’s seeds are in a category of their own, small, stunted, wimpy, or not at all. I will not be ordering from you again, and I’m sorry I wasted my money.

One big nothing. I started some seeds in doors, some out in the soil. A couple that germinated only lasted a week when the seeds from Lowes did fine.
