Fungus gnat prevention can be very easy, if you know enough facts about these annoying and damaging insects. The following are some simple and effective ways to protect your hydroponic garden from fungus gnats :
* Install screens over any vents, windows, doors, and entry points in your garden. Go with a fine mesh to ensure that all fungus gnats , including other harmful insects are kept outside your garden.
Use the soap and water cure. This is another way to get rid of fungus gnats naturally. Drench the soil with a mixture of one teaspoon of nongrease-cutting dishwashing soap and one gallon of water. Just slowly pour all of the water through the soil, then allow it to drain really well. Let it dry as much as possible before you water your plant again. This method should kill the flies or larvae that are in the soil.
Fungus Gnat Control Nematodes work on a variety of fly larvae. Beneficial nematodes control the larval stage of fungus gnats in indoor potted plants. Simply mix your nematodes into a watering can and drench the soil of all indoor plants. Follow up as needed.

* Sterilize all your supplies and tools before using them.
* Before going inside and working in your garden, it is best to wash your hands thoroughly and change your clothes first.
* Get rid of any dead or decomposing plant matter from inside and around your garden. Do so often as fungus gnats lay eggs and feed on wet, decaying roots, leaves, and other decomposing organic materials. Immediately dispose of whatever you remove by putting it in a bag and bringing it away from your garden area.
* Keep your pets out of your hydroponic garden as they can become carrier of fungus gnats and other harmful insects.
* Prevent hydroponic system from being filled up to a point that the surface of your growing medium is always wet. Reducing the fill time may be necessary, so the tray does not fill up and wet your media. You can also allow longer drying periods between cycles to deter the gnats from infesting your plants.
* Add an insect growth control product to your hydroponic system. See to it that the product you will use is intended for a hydroponic garden, and follow the instructions carefully. Such products normally have to be applied once every week for a couple of weeks before fugus gnats are completely controlled.
* Make sure that any seedling or clone you bring inside your hydroponic garden is completely free from diseases and pests.
* Clean your hydroponic system thoroughy after your harvest. Get rid of any trace of algea, and wash all lines and containers. Run a mixture of one ounce of 35% hydrogen peroxide to every gallon of water through your hydroponic system for a whole day. And then drain it off and rinse your system.
* Fog your hydroponic room with a fogger which contains pyrethrum. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. But before using this product, check if it’s safe for your plants.
* Place yellow sticky strips inside and around your garden to trap adult fungus gnats. You can buy these at your local garden supplies store or you can make these yourself.
* When using organic garden or potting soil, make sure you sterilized it first. You can use a microwave oven to do so.
* Make home-made yellow pest strips. Fungus gnats love sugar and are oddly attracted to the color yellow. You can make your own yellow pest strips by cutting a yellow poster board into small pieces and lightly coating them with corn syrup. Then lay the strips on top of the soil. The gnats will be attracted to the smell and color of the strips and will be trapped, as the syrup is sticky. When the strips are full, throw them away.
Fungus gnats slow down the growth and maturity of your plants, they cause the leaves to whither, turn brown, yellow, or curling. They can also encourage the development of viruses and other pathogens into your hydroponic plants, while harming their immune system. The gnats can even kill your plants.
